Living in beautiful Southern California means sharing our trails and backyards with some misunderstood neighbrs: rattlesnakes. While they might seem scary, most bites happen when we accidentally get too close or try to interact with them.

Staying safe is all about awareness and keeping a respectful distance. Here is how we can all enjoy the outdoors together!

Staying Safe on the Trails

When you're out hiking, remember that snakes love the same sunny spots we do. To keep your adventures worry-free, follow these simple tips:

  • Watch your step: Avoid reaching into rocks or tall grass where you can't see clearly.

  • Stick to the path: Snakes often rest just off the trail in the shade.

  • Timing is everything: Be extra cautious at dusk and dawn during warm weather.

  • Dress for success: Sturdy boots and long pants are your best friends.

  • Light the way: Always use a flashlight if you're out after dark.

Making Your Home a Snake-Free Zone🐍

You can make your yard less inviting to snakes by keeping things tidy. Focus on removing hiding spots like woodpiles and tall brush, and controlling rodents to remove their food source. Sealing gaps under fences and using fine mesh snake fencing can also provide a great barrier. Since chemical repellents aren't very effective, a clean and well-lit yard is your best defense.

If you encounter a local serpent friend, neighbors in public forums suggest contacting Ryan Jessup with Ryan’s Rattlesnake Removal to safely relocate the snake from your home or neighborhood. Ryan can be contacted at (951) 329-0807.

Tips for Parents and Pet Owners

Teaching children to "look, but don't touch" and to back away slowly if they see a snake is vital. For our furry friends, keeping dogs on a leash in brushy areas is the safest bet. You might even consider rattlesnake aversion training, which is widely available across California.

EMERGENCY GUIDE: If a Bite Occurs

If you or someone with you is bitten, stay calm. This is a medical emergency, but it is treatable.

  1. Call 911 immediately.

  2. Keep still: Movement helps venom spread, so stay as quiet and stagnant as possible.

  3. Positioning: Keep the bite at or slightly below heart level.

  4. Remove jewelry: Take off rings or watches before any swelling begins.

Critical "Do NOT" Steps:

  • DON’T use a tourniquet or ice.

  • DON’T cut the wound or try to suck out the venom.

  • DON’T try to catch the snake. Your safety comes first!

If Your Pet is Bitten:

Head to an emergency vet immediately. Carry your pet to the car to keep them still and avoid home remedies, as professional anti-venom is the only effective treatment.

Local neighbors in public forums suggest that in the case of an animal emergency, take your pet to a local VCA Animal Hospital - California Oaks or Los Alamos - for anti-venom.

By staying informed and prepared, we can keep our families and pets safe while enjoying the beautiful California outdoors!
